Wrexham have an uncomfortable decision to make about their top scorer
A fabulous start to the season for Jack Marriott took a cruel turn in training last week when Wrexham’s leading goal scorer broke his leg ahead of their encounter with Rotherham last weekend.
Marriott had finally started to show the huge quality that was rarely seen in his first few months at the club, not only proving his worth as back-up to Paul Mullin, but actually exceeding him.
The prognosis for the former League One Golden Boot winner is not good. He’s expected to miss up to four months and Wrexham will be careful about managing his workload even when he is fit.
“Jack struck the ball at goal with no one near him, but his foot went from underneath him, and he’s broken his fibula,” Parkinson said of the shock setback.
It leaves Wrexham with a very uncomfortable decision to make.
Marriott’s contributions this season
In Mullin’s absence early on this season through injury, Marriott has been the top contributor for with five goals across all competitions. He’s been strong in the box while doing a great job at attacking vacant space throughout the 2024-25 campaign and showing tremendous instincts and technical ability.
His power, pace and intelligence have been evident since the start of the campaign, while his intensity and upper body strength have made him a nightmare for central defenders to handle.
The end of Marriott at Wrexham?
The long-term injury does not bode well for a man who is set to be out of contract by the end of this season. By the looks of everything, he will be back with a chance to prove his worth before the campaign concludes, but who knows where the club will be whenever he returns.
Mullin will undoubtedly slot into his place in the attack on a regular basis and feature alongside his usual partner from seasons past Ollie Palmer while Marriott recovers.
Marriott won’t be able to train for a significant amount of time, and it’s likely to take some time before he is fully fit. And able to get back into goalscoring form.
It’s a shame because he was making a solid case to stay with the team beyond this season, but this injury might hurt his chances of getting an extension.
His injury also leaves the door wide open for the likes of Modou Faal to show what he’s got. Palmer and Mullin are already locked in for next season, and they’ve made a commitment to Faal, leaving Marriott’s future very much up in the air.
Parky and company may have seen enough to want Jack back, especially if they continue down their current path and earn another promotion, but Marriott probably still needs to prove more.
Since joining Wrexham, Marriott has six goals domestically, only one of which came during his inaugural campaign. It might not be enough, especially if there is another promotion on the cards.
